In the quiet evening of November 21, 2020, the sound of gunfire shattered the peace on the 200 block of Cedar Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. Multiple 911 calls flooded the local police department around 7 p.m., reporting shots fired. When officers from both the Egg Harbor Township and Pleasantville Police Departments arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim sight in the driveway of a residence.
There, they found 54-year-old Rennel Turner of Atlantic City, a male, lying
unconscious. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of his death was the multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. The investigation into the fatal shooting was a cooperative effort between the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department.
Less than two weeks later, an arrest was made in connection with Turner's death. Devon J. Hill, a 28-year-old man from Egg Harbor Township, was charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and two second-degree weapons offenses. According to the affidavit of probable cause, Hill had gone to the Cedar Avenue address with a friend to confront Turner about a prior altercation. However, the situation escalated, and Hill ended up in a physical confrontation with Turner, during which he pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times. This account was reportedly corroborated by several witnesses.
