In December of 2020, a disagreement over a vehicle transaction between two soldiers stationed at Fort Drum in New York set in motion a tragic chain of events that would end in a quiet, wooded area of New Jersey. Cpl. Hayden Allen Harris, a 20-year-old infantryman, was last heard from between the late evening of December 17th and the early morning of December 18th. He had arranged to meet a fellow soldier, Spc. Jamaal Mellish, in Watertown, New York, to exchange vehicles. Harris was posthumously promoted to Corporal. The meeting, however, took a dark turn when Mellish allegedly abducted Harris.
What began as a transaction between military colleagues escalated into a kidnapping. Mellish, accompanied by a 16-year-old male, is believed to have forcibly taken Harris from Watertown. They then embarked on a journey of several hours, driving from upstate New York, through Brooklyn, and ultimately to the secluded woods of Byram Township, New Jersey.
It was there, in a quiet cul-de-sac, that Harris's life was tragically cut short by a gunshot wound to the head. His body was later discovered partially buried in the snow by firefighters who were in the area for a community event.
The investigation into Harris’s disappearance and death quickly led law enforcement to his fellow soldier. Army Criminal Investigation Command, in conjunction with the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office and other local law enforcement agencies, identified Jamaal Mellish as a primary suspect. The motive appeared to be rooted in the soured vehicle deal. Evidence suggested that Mellish and the teenage accomplice were involved in the abduction and subsequent murder of Harris. Both Mellish and the 16-year-old were arrested and faced a slew of charges, including murder, kidnapping, and felony murder. The juvenile was charged as an adult. The senseless act of violence over a vehicular dispute left a community mourning the loss of a young soldier.
