On April 30, 2021, Dysheem Bruton, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot while walking down Saint Mary Street in Burlington City, New Jersey. He was transported to Virtua Willingboro Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. During the incident, a 10-year-old boy was also unintentionally shot in the foot.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect, Nicholas Wahl, a 20-year-old who lived on the same block where the shooting occurred.
An investigation was conducted by the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office and the City of Burlington Police Department. Within 24 hours of the shooting, charges were filed against Wahl as he was fleeing to South Carolina.
On May 5, 2021, Nicholas Wahl was arrested without incident at a relative's apartment in Greensville, South Carolina, by the United States Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was extradited back to New Jersey and lodged in the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly. In August 2021, a grand jury indicted Wahl on charges of Murder Aggravated Assault Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. The motive for the shooting was still under investigation following the indictment.
