In the quiet suburban neighborhood of Burlington Township, New Jersey, a devastating series of events unfolded, leaving a family shattered and a community in shock. Ten-year-old Ruben 'Tre' Johnson III, a young boy known for riding his bike and playing basketball on his street, became an innocent victim in a tragedy that claimed three lives.
On the evening of August 8, 2016, police were dispatched to the Johnson family home on Sunflower Circle for a wellness check after a concerned relative was unable to reach them. Inside, they discovered a horrific scene. Ruben Johnson Jr., age 50, had fatally shot his wife, 48-year-old Mishanda Johnson, and their young son, Tre. After taking the lives of his wife and child, Ruben Johnson Jr. then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life in a murder-suicide.
The investigation that followed confirmed that no one else was involved in the shootings.
Friends and family were left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss. It was revealed that the family had been facing significant financial difficulties, and their home was in foreclosure and scheduled for a sheriff's sale. Friends of Mishanda Johnson also recounted that she had been in a troubled marriage and had expressed fears for her safety, at one point confiding in a friend, 'If something ever happens to me, it's going to be Ruben.' In the wake of the tragedy, there were no arrests to be made, as the sole suspect was the deceased Ruben Johnson Jr.
