In the early morning hours of September 11, 2021, the life of a promising young male, Elijah Zyimar Wilson, a 20-year-old Black resident of Paterson, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. Police responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 2:50 a.m. and discovered Wilson lying at the corner of East 18th and Fulton streets with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:59 a.m.
Elijah, known to many by his stage name '495 Lightbulb,' was an emerging rapper who had recently signed a contract with a local record label, Cloud Musix. Remembered for his humor and dedication to his loved ones, he was a cherished son, brother, and friend. His sudden death sent ripples of grief through his family and the wider community, leaving a void where a bright future had been anticipated.
He had previously worked as a summer camp counselor and was one of seven children.
The investigation into the homicide led by the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office resulted in the apprehension of two suspects. On September 25, 2021, authorities arrested 19-year-old Rasheed Thomas of Paterson. A collaborative effort involving the U.S. Secret Service assisted in his capture. Following this, a second suspect, 18-year-old Jaheem Glaze of Hackensack, was taken into custody on October 29, 2021, by a team that included the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
Both Thomas and Glaze were charged with first-degree murder, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a handgun. If convicted, both men could face life in prison. The arrests brought a measure of progress for a community mourning the senseless loss of a young life, as the legal proceedings against the accused began to unfold.
