In the early morning hours of March 18, 2022, a report of a stolen vehicle and shots fired in Paterson, New Jersey, led to a grim discovery. While Paterson Police officers initially found no victim at the scene on Belmont Avenue, their investigation soon led them to University Hospital in Newark. There, they located the stolen vehicle and inside, 28-year-old Kyle D.
Newton of Hillside, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The investigation took an unexpected turn as details emerged about the events leading to Newton's death. Authorities determined that Newton and another man, 22-year-old Tahji Rosebrough of Newark, were allegedly engaged in a robbery in Paterson when the shooting occurred. It was during the commission of this crime that Rosebrough allegedly inflicted the injuries that resulted in Newton's death.
Tahji Rosebrough was arrested at University Hospital by the Rutgers Police Department and subsequently turned over to Paterson authorities. He was charged with murder, armed robbery, and two handgun possession offenses. Following the charges, the state filed a motion for his pretrial detention.
