On a Saturday afternoon in Swedesboro, New Jersey, a family celebration turned into a scene of tragedy, ending the life of 43-year-old Dennis McKenzie. On October 9, 2021, police responded to a 911 call from McKenzie's home on Cottonwood Road shortly after 4 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered the male resident deceased, having sustained gunshot wounds to his head and back. An autopsy later confirmed that the manner of his death was a homicide.
Present at the scene was McKenzie's 23-year-old stepson, Christian Smith of Philadelphia. Authorities promptly arrested Smith in connection with the fatal shooting.
The investigation suggested that the tragic incident stemmed from a dispute that erupted during the family gathering. The disagreement reportedly began when Smith objected to the presence of a gay guest whom McKenzie had invited. The conflict escalated, leading to the deadly confrontation. Smith was subsequently charged with murder and weapons offenses and was held in the Salem County Jail.
