On a Monday morning in South Plainfield, New Jersey, a quiet condominium complex became the scene of a heart-wrenching family tragedy. Inside a residence on Coppola Drive, 38-year-old Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, a male of Indian descent, was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident, which occurred on November 27, 2023, also claimed the lives of two others who were found at the scene, 72-year-old Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt and 72-year-old Bindu Brahmbhatt.
Authorities responding to a report of gunfire around 9:00 A.M. discovered the grim scene. Dilipkumar and Bindu Brahmbhatt were pronounced dead inside the home from gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly pointed to a suspect who was not only related to the victims but also lived in the same residence. This individual was present at the home when law enforcement arrived.
The investigation determined that this was not a random act of violence and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Om Brahmbhatt, the nephew of Yashkumar and the grandson of Dilipkumar and Bindu Brahmbhatt. He was taken into custody without incident on the same day as the shootings and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. According to police reports, Om Brahmbhatt confessed to the killings, stating he shot his grandparents while they were asleep and then shot his uncle multiple times. It is alleged that he used a handgun he had purchased online.
In the wake of the devastating loss, Yashkumar Brahmbhatt was remembered by his wife as a loving husband and the father of their 4-year-old son. Om Brahmbhatt was held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a pre-trial detention hearing. The motive for the tragic event remains part of an active and ongoing investigation.
