On the evening of November 28, 2021, Takwail Bailey, a 29-year-old male, was fatally shot in Camden, New Jersey. The incident occurred at approximately 10:32 p.m. when the Camden County Police Department received a ShotSpotter notification of ten rounds fired near the 1000 block of Lois Avenue. Responding officers found Bailey in the parking lot outside an apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:57 p.m.
The investigation that followed relied heavily on surveillance footage that captured the homicide. The video showed a man exiting a black Ford F-150 truck, approaching Bailey, and shooting him several times. The gunman then returned to the truck and fled the scene.
Detectives were able to track the vehicle to and from the location of the shooting using the video evidence.
Through the investigation, authorities identified Lesure Funari, a 25-year-old from Burlington City, New Jersey, as the suspect. On January 7, 2022, Funari was arrested in Camden by the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. Funari was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and two second-degree weapons offenses.
On June 6, 2024, a jury found Lesure Funari guilty of the murder of Takwail Bailey, as well as the associated weapons charges. He was later sentenced to 60 years in prison. According to the terms of his sentencing, Funari will be required to serve 85 percent of his term before the possibility of parole.
