On a late spring morning, the life of 15-year-old Anthony Torres-Sanchez was tragically cut short in his hometown of Vineland, New Jersey. On May 26, 2022, around 11:45 a.m., police responded to a call of a gunshot victim in the 1800 block of North Delsea Drive. Upon arrival, they found the young male with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Inspira Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to mourn a life filled with promise, particularly on the baseball field where
he was a talented player.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, believing that Anthony knew the individual or individuals involved. The investigation moved swiftly, and within a day of the fatal shooting, authorities had their first suspect in custody. Deshawn T. Bowen, a 23-year-old from the neighboring city of Bridgeton, was apprehended. A few days later, a second suspect, 18-year-old Rohdane E. Watson, Jr. of Vineland, was also taken into custody. Both men were subsequently charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder for their alleged roles in the teen's death.
As the case moved forward, details began to emerge about the circumstances that may have led to the deadly encounter. According to court documents, one of the accused, Deshawn Bowen, told investigators that the meeting with Anthony was arranged for a drug transaction involving marijuana. It was during this transaction that Anthony was shot. Surveillance footage showing a vehicle allegedly used by the suspects was instrumental in identifying Bowen and Watson. While the legal process began for the two men charged, a community was left grieving the loss of a young man, holding candlelight vigils and remembering a life that ended far too soon.
