Carl Cooper, a 17-year-old African American, was one of the victims in the tragic Algiers Motel incident that occurred during the Detroit 12th Street Riot on the night of July 25-26, 1967. The incident involved a raid by a task force composed of the Detroit Police Department, Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Army National Guard. The task force was responding to reports of gunfire, which were later attributed to a starter pistol being fired inside the motel.
