On the evening of October 21, 1974, the prolific African-American author Donald Goines, aged 37, and his common-law wife, Shirley Sailor, were found shot to death in their apartment in Highland Park, Michigan. Police discovered their bodies after receiving an anonymous phone call. Goines was found in the living room, while Sailor's body was in the kitchen; both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
