In the late evening hours of August 23, 2016, the quiet community of Burtonsville, Maryland, was disturbed by an act of violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Syed Asad Hassan. Emergency services were dispatched to a residence on Sandy Spring Road around 10:23 p.m. following a report of an assault. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim inside the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Hassan was quickly transported to a nearby trauma center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
At the time of the incident, two other men were present in the house with Hassan. These individuals were identified as 20-year-old Jason A. Berrios, who also resided at the home, and 19-year-old Tevon Davis. While they were present at the scene of the homicide, their immediate connection to the shooting was not clear to investigators in the initial stages of the inquiry.
During the subsequent investigation of the crime scene, detectives executed a search warrant and uncovered a significant quantity of marijuana, which they determined was intended for distribution. This discovery led to the arrest of both Berrios and Davis on charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Despite these arrests on drug-related offenses, authorities made it clear at the time that neither man had been charged in connection with Syed Asad Hassan's death.
