On March 9, 1995, Scott Amedure, a 32-year-old resident of Lake Orion, Michigan, was tragically killed by Jonathan Schmitz, aged 24. This incident occurred just days after both men participated in a taping of "The Jenny Jones Show," during which Amedure revealed a same-sex crush on Schmitz. Although Schmitz appeared to take the revelation in stride during the show, expressing that he was "definitely heterosexual," the situation escalated upon their return home.
