In 2009, a dispute escalated to a fatal encounter for 36-year-old Shawn Johnson, a male resident of Detroit, Michigan. The incident occurred near a local business, the Asian Fish Market, and stemmed from a seemingly minor infraction. Johnson had urinated outside the establishment, which led to a heated confrontation with the market's owner, Leroy Moon.
The argument quickly turned violent, and Moon fatally shot Johnson.
Following the shooting, Leroy Moon was arrested and faced legal proceedings. His journey through the justice system was unusually prolonged. After two murder trials concluded without a verdict, Moon entered a plea of no contest to a lesser charge of manslaughter in 2011. The plea agreement stipulated a one-year jail sentence. However, due to a combination of factors, including health issues faced by Moon and a self-admitted oversight by the prosecutor's office where they lost track of the case, the sentencing was not carried out for several years.
For years, Moon remained free on bond, and the case lay dormant, a fact that was eventually brought to light by The Detroit News. Finally, in January 2018, seven years after his conviction, Leroy Moon, then 78 years old, was sentenced. A judge ordered him to serve the originally agreed-upon one year in jail, with the possibility of work release, and also imposed a period of probation. The resolution of the case brought a long-awaited, though delayed, sense of closure to the family of Shawn Johnson.
