In the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the city of Jackson, Michigan, recorded its second homicide of the year with the death of 49-year-old Michael Mishaw. An African American male, Mishaw was discovered by a passerby in a parking lot on the city's east side in the 1600 block of E. Michigan Avenue at approximately 8:45 a.m. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his upper torso.
The investigation into Mishaw's death began promptly, with Jackson Police Department
officers canvassing the area. Their investigation led them to review surveillance footage from a nearby business, the Seed Cellar, which has a multi-camera system monitoring the shared parking lot where Mishaw was found. The business owner confirmed he was working with police to review footage from the early morning hours. Authorities have indicated a strong possibility that a 911 call reporting several shots fired in the vicinity of Orange Street at approximately 2:13 a.m. is connected to the homicide. At that time, officers had responded to the call but did not find anything suspicious.
As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made in the shooting death of Michael Mishaw. Police have, however, spoken with three persons of interest in connection with the case. The family of Mishaw, who they describe as a beloved brother, father, and son, is left grappling with the sudden and violent loss. His sister, Melissa Collins, remembered him as a big brother who was always there for his family, willing to help in any way he could. The family is now awaiting answers as the investigation into his death unfolds, coping with their grief and the many unanswered questions surrounding his murder.
