On the evening of May 25, 1995, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire in Southwest Detroit. Jerry Foster Philpot, II, a 28-year-old male Detroit Police Officer, was killed in the line of duty around 9:30 p.m. by what was described as suspected gang gunfire. A decorated officer with six years on the force, Philpot had earned two citations and a lifesaving award, a testament to his commitment to the community he served.
His untimely death left behind a wife, a 7-month-old child, his parents, and siblings.
The violent encounter that claimed Officer Philpot's life unfolded with shocking speed. The weapon used in the assault was an AK-47 assault rifle. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, one suspect was fatally wounded at the scene, and three other individuals were taken into custody. The investigation swiftly pointed to Scott Lee Younes, an 18-year-old reputed gang member, as the man who fired the fatal shots.
The pursuit of justice for Officer Philpot culminated in the conviction of his killer. On May 28, 1996, a jury found Scott Lee Younes guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, and a felony firearms charge. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder, with additional sentences of 20 to 40 years for each assault charge and a two-year term for the weapons charge. Years later, the man responsible for Officer Philpot's death was found deceased in his prison cell.
