Larry Brown Jr., a 23-year-old man from Detroit, Michigan, was found dead late in the evening of June 30, 2021, when police rushed toward a duplex near Schaefer Highway and Capitol Street after a frantic child-endangerment call came in around 10:25 p.m. Officers were told a small child was being held inside a home in the 12100 block of Schaefer, and as they tried to make contact at the neighboring residence, they discovered Brown and another victim inside, unresponsive, each with a gunshot
wound to the head. Medics arrived but could only pronounce them dead at the scene.
As the shock settled over the block, the emergency that pulled officers there became clearer: a 5-year-old girl had been signaling for help from a window, telling neighbors a “monster” was coming back. The neighborhood reacted before the night could swallow her cries—people gathered, flagged down police, and tried to keep her in sight until officers forced their way in and got her out. The child was taken for medical care, and investigators began piecing together how she had vanished from her own home while death sat just steps away.
Prosecutors identified the suspect as Dangelo Cash Clemons of Detroit, saying it was alleged he abducted the child and fled into the residence next door. On July 3, 2021, Clemons was charged with kidnapping and child enticement; he was arraigned in Detroit’s 36th District Court and received a $250,000 bond with a GPS tether requirement. Authorities said parts of the case were still under investigation at that stage, and few additional details were released publicly.
A month later, the case broadened from a kidnapping horror into a double-homicide prosecution. On August 3, 2021, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Clemons was charged in connection with the fatal shootings of Brown and the second victim, Colby Millsap, describing the killings as occurring before the child was taken. The charging package listed one count of felony murder, one count of first-degree murder, and two counts of felony firearm, and the prosecutor’s release noted Clemons was arraigned that day in 36th District Court, with a probable-cause conference scheduled for August 20, 2021, and a preliminary examination set for August 27, 2021.
