Javon Perry, a 22-year-old father, was fatally shot on January 5, 2017, while pumping gas at a Marathon gas station on Gratiot Avenue and Eastburn Street on Detroit's east side. The incident occurred shortly after midnight after Perry had finished work for the day.
Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the moments leading up to the shooting. Two men, later identified as Derrick Quintin Everson Jr., 23, and Kyrell Raymon Alonzo, 24, were seen encountering Perry.
After a brief argument, Perry attempted to flee, but one of the suspects pursued him and shot him in the head.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify Everson and Alonzo as the primary suspects. A third man, 26-year-old Joseph Lucas, was identified as the alleged getaway driver. In the days following the shooting, the Detroit Police Department actively sought information from the public, which led to numerous tips.
Joseph Lucas was the first to be apprehended and was arraigned on a murder charge over the weekend following the incident. Subsequently, Kyrell Alonzo turned himself in to the police at the jail complex on Mound Road. Derrick Everson Jr., the alleged shooter, also surrendered to authorities. All three men were ultimately charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm offenses.
