In the summer of 2003, a horrific scene unfolded in a home on Ashton Street in northwest Detroit, forever altering the lives of the Bailey family. On an otherwise quiet Tuesday evening, a domestic tragedy reached its violent crescendo, leaving three young children dead and a fourth clinging to life. Among the victims was three-year-old Ayana Bailey, a young girl whose life was cut tragically short.
The chain of events began when Anthony Bailey, the children's father, contacted his
estranged wife with a chilling message: 'Watch the news tonight.' What followed was an act of unimaginable violence. Inside the family home, Anthony Bailey is said to have used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot his four children. Ayana was killed by a gunshot wound to the head. Her older sister, 11-year-old Sharnice, and her one-year-old brother, Lamar, also succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. After the shootings, a small fire was set in the house.
When Detroit firefighters responded to the fire, they discovered the children in the basement and, upon noticing their gunshot wounds, immediately called the police. The sole survivor, nine-year-old Antonia Bailey, was found conscious but gravely injured. She was able to identify her father as the perpetrator to the authorities. A shotgun was later found leaning against the side of the house.
The Detroit Police Department launched a massive search for Anthony Bailey, involving over 70 officers. The search concluded the following day when a despondent Bailey was spotted on an overpass. After initially providing a false name, he was identified and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree felony murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, and arson. The motive appeared to be linked to domestic strife, with reports of restraining orders and a history of domestic disputes between Anthony Bailey and his wife.
