On a Monday afternoon, the 9th of May, 2005, a dedicated public servant, Lavern Steven Brann, a 44-year-old male detective with the Battle Creek City Police Department, was diligently working on a homicide case that had shaken the community. He and his partner were following a lead that took them to the Forest Hills apartment complex on Brewer Drive.
Their intention was to interview the mother of a person of interest in the murder of a 66-year-old taxi driver, Eunice Sharp, which had occurred the previous month.
As they arrived at the apartment complex, the two detectives split up to cover the building. Detective Brann approached the front while his partner went to the rear. It was a routine investigative step, one they had likely taken countless times in their careers. However, this day would tragically diverge from the routine. Shortly after they separated, the sharp report of gunshots echoed from the front of the building. Detective Brann’s partner, upon hearing the gunfire, rushed towards the sound to investigate and was immediately confronted by an armed man.
An exchange of gunfire erupted between the detective and the armed suspect. In the ensuing chaos, Detective Brann's partner was shot in the leg as the suspect made his escape. When backup officers swarmed the scene, they made a devastating discovery in a stairwell of the complex. Detective Brann was found with gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to Battle Creek Health Systems, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them at the hospital.
The man responsible for the murder of Detective Brann was later apprehended. Following an investigation, he was convicted on 27 various counts, including the murder of the detective. A judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would never again pose a threat to the community that Detective Brann had sworn to protect. The suspect also later pleaded no contest to the murder of the taxi driver, the very case that had brought the detectives to his doorstep. Lavern Steven Brann had served on the Battle Creek City Police Department for 20 years, leaving behind a wife and two daughters.
