On a tragic day in May of 2006, the community of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, lost a dedicated public servant. Corporal Jason Anthony Makowski, a 31-year-old male, was fatally wounded in the line of duty. An 11-year veteran of the Dearborn Heights Police Department, he was known to be a smart and driven officer with a promising career ahead of him. Makowski was not only a respected officer but also a father, leaving behind a young son.
His roots in the community ran deep, as he was born and raised in Dearborn Heights and came from a family with a history of service in the local police department, including his father, an uncle, and a cousin.
The fatal incident unfolded on the evening of May 24, 2006, when police received distressing 911 calls about a man armed with a handgun who was arguing with garbage workers and ordering neighbors into their homes near the intersection of Joy and Beech Daly Roads. The man had ominously warned that 'there's going to be some killing soon.' As Corporal Makowski and other officers arrived at the scene and began to interview witnesses, the gunman appeared at the front door of his residence and, without any warning, opened fire.
The suspect retreated into his home and continued to fire at the officers from inside. As he sought cover behind a neighboring house, Corporal Makowski was struck in the face by a. 45-caliber bullet. The relentless gunfire from the shooter prevented fellow officers from immediately reaching the wounded corporal to render aid. Officers from multiple jurisdictions responded to the volatile scene.
Eventually, another officer armed with a rifle was able to shoot and kill the suspect. With the threat neutralized, officers were finally able to reach Corporal Makowski. He was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Corporal Jason Anthony Makowski succumbed to his wound in the early hours of the following morning, May 25, 2006. He made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community and fellow officers.
