In a tragic turn of events on January 17, 2021, a Dearborn Heights man, Jeffrey Steen, a 23-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot in his home. The incident stemmed from a domestic dispute with his stepbrother that began earlier in the day and escalated to violence.
An argument that ignited between Jeffrey Steen and his 21-year-old stepbrother, Jalen Gullatt, at a basketball game earlier in the day, continued when they returned to their shared residence on Clairview
Drive. The verbal altercation turned physical, culminating in Gullatt allegedly firing a handgun multiple times, striking Steen. Following the shooting, which occurred around 10:15 p.m., Gullatt fled the scene. Emergency services were called, and medics transported Steen to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement officials identified Jalen Gullatt as the suspect and apprehended him the following day. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged Gullatt with first-degree murder and felony firearm. He was arraigned in 20th District Court in Dearborn Heights and was remanded to jail. A probable cause conference was scheduled for February 3, 2021. Family and friends remembered Jeffrey Steen as a loving and charismatic individual who harbored dreams of becoming a father and a boxer.
