In the winter of 2006, a Detroit home that should have been filled with holiday preparations became the scene of a heart-wrenching tragedy. Nelda Grant, a 51-year-old female, was a dedicated teacher at a charter school. Those who knew her and her 22-year-old daughter, Rachel Johnson, described them as kind and giving individuals. This warmth and kindness were tragically extinguished on December 21, 2006, in their home on the 18000 block of Dean Street, near 7 Mile and Ryan on the city's east
side.
The devastating chain of events began when Nelda returned home shortly after midnight to a horrifying discovery. Her daughter, Rachel, a student at Macomb County Community College, was dead, having been shot. In a state of shock and desperation, Nelda immediately reached out for help, calling both 911 and her brother. However, the perpetrator was either still present in the house or had returned. During her frantic calls for assistance, Nelda was also shot and killed.
The man responsible for this brutal act was identified as Donnell Ramon Johnson, Rachel Johnson's boyfriend. It was revealed that Rachel had been attempting to end her relationship with him. In a grim foreshadowing of the violence to come, Nelda had previously barred Donnell from the home after he had stolen a family gun, which he later returned. The couple's turmoil ultimately led to the tragic deaths of both mother and daughter, leaving Rachel's 3-year-old daughter, who was present in the home, physically unharmed but without her mother and grandmother.
Following the double murder, a 16-hour manhunt for Donnell Ramon Johnson ensued. The search concluded with his arrest around 4:30 p.m. on December 22, 2006. His capture brought a small measure of relief to a community that had been shaken by the senseless violence.
