In the summer of 2014, a promising young life was cut tragically short in Wyoming, Michigan. Ta’Carhri Richardson, a 17-year-old male, was looking forward to his senior year at Godwin Heights High School. He was a student athlete, a member of the junior varsity basketball team, and a beloved friend and son. His future, filled with the potential for graduation, college, and starting a family, was abruptly erased on August 3, 2014.
On that fateful day, Richardson was driving a car with friends. In the backseat, another 17-year-old, Marquis Kilgore, was handling a loaded handgun. The weapon discharged, sending a bullet through the driver's seat and into Richardson's back. The shooting was later described by a judge as accidental. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Ta’Carhri Richardson succumbed to his injuries.
The initial aftermath was filled with grief and confusion. Ta’Carhri's mother recalled Kilgore, with her son's blood on his clothes, claiming he didn't know what happened and had only heard a loud pop. However, the investigation soon revealed the truth of the situation. Marquis Kilgore was arrested and ultimately admitted to his role in the fatal shooting.
In February of 2015, Marquis Kilgore was sentenced for his actions. He was sentenced to two and a half to 15 years for manslaughter and an additional two years for a felony firearm charge. During the sentencing, Ta’Carhri's mother delivered a powerful victim impact statement, lamenting all the milestones her son would never experience. She spoke of the lost opportunities for a high school graduation, a college degree, a wedding, and the chance to become a father, all taken away by a senseless act.
