Babul Miah, a 41-year-old man, was working his shift as a cab driver in Detroit on the night of March 25, 2015, when his life was cut short. A dedicated driver for Checker Cab for 12 years, he was known for his kind demeanor and for recently completing a safety program with the Detroit Police Department. That evening, in the 15700 block of Ardmore Street, a tragic encounter would end his life.
Patrolling officers in the area noticed a man walking away from Miah's still-running cab.
As they approached, the man, later identified as 21-year-old Jalen Edwards, discarded a handgun and fled. The officers gave chase and apprehended him in a nearby abandoned house. Upon returning to the taxi, they discovered Babul Miah inside, unresponsive. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jalen Edwards was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, armed robbery, and felony firearm. On October 15, 2015, Edwards, through a plea deal, was convicted of second-degree murder and weapons charges for the death of Babul Miah. He was sentenced to a minimum of 26 years in prison for the murder, with an additional two years for the felony firearm charge. His earliest possible release is scheduled for 2043.
