In the summer of 2018, a 70-year-old woman named Shari Christine Saunders embarked on a journey from her home in Norfolk, Virginia, to visit family in Monroeville, Alabama. On August 4, 2018, she was on the road, making her way south. The last time she was seen was in the early morning hours of August 5, when she stopped for gas in Evergreen, Alabama. After that stop, Shari Saunders seemingly vanished.
Concern grew as days turned into more than a week with no word from her. On August 13, 2018, her red Toyota Corolla was discovered abandoned on a dirt road in Conecuh County, Alabama. The car was stuck in the mud, and the front passenger window was broken. Several of her belongings were missing from the vehicle, including two suitcases, her cell phone, a tablet, and a GPS. Despite searches conducted by sheriff's offices from three counties, there was no sign of Shari.
For over two years, her disappearance remained a mystery. Then, on December 26, 2020, skeletal remains were found in a wooded area off a private road in Escambia County, not far from where her car had been located. In April 2021, a forensic laboratory confirmed the remains were those of Shari Saunders.
Authorities are investigating her death as a homicide. While the Escambia County Sheriff's Office has indicated that they are focusing on particular suspects, no arrests have been publicly announced. The investigation into who was responsible for the death of Shari Saunders is ongoing.
