In the late hours of a summer evening in Flint, Michigan, the life of Jarrett Alexander Kent was tragically cut short. On August 11, 2015, the 26-year-old African American male was fatally shot on the 2200 block of Devon Lane. The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m., and Kent was rushed to Hurley Medical Center where he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
Known affectionately as 'Jay' to his friends and family, he was remembered as a man full of life, a prankster, and a joker who loved to barbecue, read, and spend time with his loved ones. He was a devoted father to his two sons, Kaiden and Khristian.
The investigation into Jarrett Kent's murder led to the identification of multiple suspects by the Flint police. Deshawn Tiggs, a 20-year-old, was charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm in connection with Kent's death. Tiggs was also facing charges in two other separate cases, including first-degree home invasion, armed robbery, and assault with intent to murder.
Authorities also pursued two other individuals in connection with the homicide. Jamarr McKenzie, who was 23 years old at the time, was charged with lying to a peace officer during the investigation into the violent crime. Additionally, police sought 22-year-old Savon Johnson, who was charged with first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and a felony firearm charge.
Jarrett Kent was born on January 31, 1989, in Baltimore, Maryland, and later attended Flint Community Schools, eventually earning his GED from Carman-Ainsworth Adult High School. His funeral service was held on August 20, 2015, at the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and he was laid to rest at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint. The tragic event underscored the persistent issue of gun violence within the Flint community.
