On a late summer evening in Flint, Michigan, the life of 43-year-old Dewaun Marcell Bell was tragically cut short. On August 25, 2015, Bell, a Black male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that also left another man injured. The incident unfolded with a sudden eruption of gunfire that shattered the calm of the neighborhood and forever altered the lives of those involved.
Responding to reports of a double shooting, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene to find a chaotic and grim
situation. Dewaun Marcell Bell had sustained life-threatening injuries and, despite the efforts of first responders, succumbed to his wounds. The second victim, a then-20-year-old man, was also struck by gunfire but survived the attack. The initial investigation pointed towards a dispute that had escalated to a violent confrontation, leaving one man dead and another wounded.
In the days following the shooting, the Flint Police Department worked diligently to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their investigation quickly focused on a person of interest, and on August 27, 2015, authorities announced the arrest of 22-year-old Jacoyee Wallace. He was taken into custody in connection with the shooting that claimed Bell's life and injured the other man.
Following his arrest, Jacoyee Wallace was arraigned on a litany of felony charges. These included open murder in the death of Dewaun Marcell Bell, assault with intent to murder for the shooting of the second victim, and multiple felony firearm offenses. As the case proceeded through the legal system, Wallace was bound over for trial, where the evidence gathered by investigators would be presented to a jury. Ultimately, Wallace was convicted in connection with the death of Dewaun Marcell Bell. He was subsequently sentenced to serve a term of 19 to 40 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting.
