In the late spring of 2016, a young man's long and private battle with depression came to a tragic end in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Corbin J. Armock, a 26-year-old resident of nearby Wyoming, took his own life on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. His death, which occurred outside Spectrum Butterworth Hospital, was the result of a single gunshot wound to the head.
The circumstances surrounding Corbin's final moments prompted a significant law enforcement response.
In a note found in his pocket, he mentioned a 'parting gift' left in his vehicle for the police. This message led to the bomb squad being called to the scene to inspect his backpack and car as a precaution. However, no explosives were found. The 'gift' was a collection of personal items: a stack of CDs with music, a verbal suicide note, and a slideshow of pictures featuring Corbin and his family.
The investigation into his death confirmed that Corbin had legally purchased the firearm used. His family revealed to investigators that he had been receiving professional mental health counseling since his high school years and had made two previous suicide attempts as an adult. His parents were unaware that he owned a gun, and his father requested that the weapon be destroyed following the investigation.
Corbin's death was officially ruled a suicide, and as such, there were no arrests made nor any suspects sought in connection with the case. Those who knew and loved Corbin remembered him for his creativity, generosity, and quick wit. His passing left his family, including his parents and siblings, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, to mourn the profound loss of a young man who had struggled so deeply.
