In the summer of 2016, a joyous block party in Pontiac, Michigan, turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of one family. Andre Isiah Maurice Shaw, a 36-year-old Black male known affectionately as 'Lil Dre,' was attending the gathering on Michigan Avenue, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, on the evening of July 2nd. The celebration was in honor of a friend who had returned home for a visit.
At some point during the night, the festive atmosphere was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Two individuals, who were reportedly not part of the block party, began shooting. In the chaos that ensued, Shaw was struck by multiple bullets. When Oakland County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they found him lying on the front porch of a home with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to McLaren Oakland Hospital for medical attention, but his injuries proved to be too severe. Andre Isiah Maurice Shaw succumbed to his wounds and passed away in the early morning hours of July 3, 2016.
Remembered as a loving father to his three children and a skillful auto mechanic at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, his sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community. Friends and family recalled him as a man who was always smiling and treated everyone with respect. He was a graduate of Pontiac Northern High School and was known for his creative talents in artwork, landscaping, and construction.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Despite the presence of potential witnesses at the block party, information about the perpetrators was not immediately forthcoming. Months after his death, in December 2016, Crime Stoppers of Michigan, in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, offered a cash reward for any information that would lead to an arrest in his case. However, to date, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Andre Isiah Maurice Shaw. The individuals responsible for his death have not been publicly identified, leaving his family and community still waiting for justice.
