Tilmon was a well-known ceasefire advocate in his community, working with the violence prevention program Cease Fire to mentor young men and steer them away from a life of crime.
He was also the stepfather of Davontae Sanford, a young man who had been wrongfully imprisoned for eight years for a quadruple murder he did not commit and was released just months before Tilmon's death.

In October of 2017, Floyd Darnell Nix was convicted of the murder of Jeremaine Tilmon. He was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for his crime.
