On a snowy day in Detroit, Michigan, what began as a day of playful camaraderie between friends ended in a devastating tragedy. Thirteen-year-old Emarjae Watkins, a male, was spending his day off from school on December 12, 2016, at a friend's house on Tireman Street. Inside the home, Emarjae and two brothers, aged 14 and 15, were engrossed in playing video games, a typical pastime for teenage boys on a winter day.
The boys were under the supervision of their grandmother, who had gone to work, leaving them alone in the house.
The course of the day took a fatal turn when one of the brothers, a 13-year-old, discovered his grandmother's loaded handgun, which had been left on a nightstand in her bedroom. The boys began playing with the firearm, and in a moment of reckless curiosity, the gun discharged. Emarjae was struck in the chest by a single bullet. The playful atmosphere of the snow day was shattered by the sound of the gunshot, and a young life was abruptly cut short.
In the aftermath of the shooting, both the grandmother, Lise Cox, and her grandson were taken into custody. Authorities initially charged Cox with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, and felony firearm, alleging that she had not properly secured the weapon. However, a Wayne County judge later dismissed all charges against her during a preliminary examination. The judge's decision was influenced by the fact that she was not present at the time of the incident and had no direct role in Emarjae's death.
The 13-year-old who fired the shot was charged as a juvenile. In April 2017, he pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge in juvenile court. As part of the plea agreement, two other charges against him were dismissed. Before his sentencing, the court ordered a clinical evaluation for the teen. The tragic incident served as a grim reminder of the potential consequences when firearms are not safely stored away from the reach of children.
