On December 21, 2013, Haitham Elias, aged 48, was fatally shot while sitting in his vehicle at a Sunoco gas station located at 6 Mile and Mt. Elliot on Detroit's east side. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. The circumstances of the crime suggest that the assailant approached Haitham while he was inside his car and opened fire.
