In the early morning hours of December 17, 2016, a dispute that began over a game of pool inside the Stardust Lounge in Inkster, Michigan, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 26-year-old Joseph Franklin. Franklin, a Black male from Dearborn Heights and a father of three, had been at the nightclub with his mother. An altercation broke out between Franklin and another man, later identified as his own cousin, 28-year-old Rashard Bell of Ypsilanti.
Following the initial physical confrontation inside the lounge, Franklin and his mother left the establishment. However, the conflict was far from over. Bell followed them into the parking lot, where he produced a gun and shot Franklin once in the torso. Franklin's mother was with him as he succumbed to the fatal wound in the cold parking lot.
The Michigan State Police, who handle homicide investigations in Inkster, quickly identified Rashard Bell as the primary suspect. An extensive search was conducted for Bell, who was considered armed and dangerous. He was apprehended by state troopers later the same day.
Bell was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and using a firearm to commit a felony. Due to his prior convictions, he was also charged as a habitual offender and was held without bond. Reports indicated that Bell had recently reconnected with the family after serving an eight-year prison sentence. The tragic event, stemming from a seemingly minor argument, left a family devastated by the loss of a loved one at the hands of a relative.
