In the winter of 2017, a Detroit community was shaken by the violent death of Emmitt Conner, a 41-year-old man. On the evening of Friday, February 17th, the sound of approximately four gunshots pierced the air in the 19100 block of Runyon Street on the city's east side. Witnesses who heard the shots soon discovered Conner in the driveway of a home, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Family members rushed to his side, and he was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A beloved father of five, his sudden and tragic death left his family devastated.
In the immediate aftermath, a SWAT team descended upon the house where the shooting occurred, searching for clues and a reason for the violent act that had claimed a man's life. The investigation took a surprising turn just two days later. On Sunday night, police were called back to the scene of the crime, where they found a man who had returned to the location of the fatal shooting. This individual was taken into custody in connection with Conner's death.
The man arrested was identified as 23-year-old DeQuan Kemp. Following his arrest, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought serious charges against him. Kemp was formally charged with first-degree murder, a charge indicating premeditation and intent, as well as felony firearm violations. The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public as the investigation continued.
