On a cold evening in Detroit, Michigan, three-year-old Christian Miller was excitedly on his way to see 'Sesame Street Live' with his godmother. It was January 24, 2019, and the promise of a fun-filled event was tragically cut short by an act of road rage on the Southfield Freeway. While secured in his car seat, Christian was struck by a bullet fired into his godmother's vehicle.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day, January 25, 2019.
The incident began when Christian's godmother, Charmaine Strickland, reportedly cut in front of another vehicle to get onto the freeway. The driver of the other car, later identified as Derrick Durham, became enraged. A passenger in Durham's car, Jena Ewais, testified that she saw him with a gun and heard a loud bang. Strickland recounted hearing her car window shatter and then discovering a bullet hole in the side of Christian's car seat.
Durham, then 24 years old, turned himself into the Michigan State Police shortly after the incident and was charged with open murder and other related felonies. Ewais was granted immunity in exchange for her testimony against him. The initial trial in December 2019 resulted in a hung jury, unable to reach a verdict.
However, justice for Christian Miller was not denied. In a subsequent trial, Derrick Durham was found guilty of murder. In May 2022, he was sentenced to a minimum of 70 to 100 years in prison for his role in the senseless killing of the young boy. The tragic death of Christian, a vibrant and loved little boy who enjoyed dancing and his favorite foods of chicken nuggets and pizza, left a lasting scar on his family and the Detroit community, highlighting the devastating consequences of gun violence.
