On a cold November evening in Detroit, 46-year-old Rasheen McClain, a dedicated male police officer with 16 years of service, responded to a call that would tragically be his last. On November 20, 2019, McClain and his partner were dispatched to a home on Wyoming Avenue following reports of a domestic dispute where a man had broken in and was threatening the occupants with a firearm.
Upon their arrival, they learned the armed suspect was inside the house.
McClain, leading a team of four officers, began the perilous task of clearing the residence. After sweeping the main and upper floors, they proceeded to the basement. As they descended the stairs, the suspect, 28-year-old JuJuan Parks, ambushed them, opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle. McClain was struck in the neck, and his partner was wounded in the leg. As Parks fled the scene, he was shot and wounded by other officers before being apprehended a block away. McClain was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
The investigation into Parks revealed a violent history. He was on parole at the time of the shooting and was subsequently linked to other violent crimes, including two other homicides that occurred in the days leading up to Officer McClain's death. In the aftermath of the tragic event, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought a litany of charges against Parks. He faced a 16-count complaint that included first-degree premeditated murder, murder of a police officer, three counts of assault with intent to murder, and multiple weapons charges.
In a resolution to the case, JuJuan Parks pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Officer Rasheen McClain and another man, Nathaniel Loyd. As part of a plea agreement, charges in connection with the death of a third man were dismissed. In February 2023, Parks was sentenced to a term of 46 to 60 years in prison. At his sentencing, a letter from McClain's widow was read, expressing the profound and lasting pain his actions had caused. While Parks's attorney stated his client was remorseful, Parks himself declined to speak.
