In the early morning hours of December 12, 2019, a verbal disagreement inside a home on Manor Street in Detroit escalated into a tragic double homicide. Devon Gillard, a 41-year-old Black male, and his 69-year-old uncle, Anthony Foster, a Vietnam veteran, were fatally shot. The incident, which occurred around 12:15 a.m., cut short the lives of both men, leaving their family to grapple with an unimaginable loss.
Responding to the scene, police discovered Gillard and Foster in the living
room. Also present in the home was the alleged shooter, who was seated nearby with a handgun. The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Sylvester Denard Gilmore. He was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.
Gilmore was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of felony firearm in connection with the deaths of Devon Gillard and Anthony Foster. While the specific motive for the shooting remains unclear, it was reported that the three men were inside the home when an argument broke out, leading Gilmore to allegedly pull out a gun and shoot both his relatives. The family of the victims later held a vigil to mourn their loss and seek solace in the face of such a devastating event.
