In the early hours of March 21, 2021, a life was tragically cut short in the concrete confines of the Motor City Casino parking garage in Detroit. Kermit McCants, a 25-year-old Black male from Clinton Township, was fatally shot following a dispute. The incident unfolded around 1:48 a.m. on the second level of the parking structure, a place that would become the final scene of McCants' life.
The evening began with a personal disagreement between McCants and his girlfriend.
As their argument grew more heated, a bystander, later identified as 27-year-old Nicholas White of Detroit, chose to intervene. What started as an attempt to step into a couple's quarrel quickly escalated into a verbal confrontation between the two men. The exchange of words turned deadly when White produced a firearm and shot McCants multiple times.
After the shooting, White fled the scene in his vehicle, leaving McCants grievously wounded. Detroit police officers responded to reports of the shooting and found McCants suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The following day, on March 22, 2021, investigators apprehended Nicholas White.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged White with first-degree murder and felony firearm. He was arraigned in the 36th District Court, where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. The court denied bond for White, scheduling a probable cause conference and a preliminary examination for April of the same year. The case then moved through the legal system to determine the consequences of the fatal encounter that transpired in the quiet of the casino's parking garage.
