Marathon gas station, where witnesses reported seeing Holmes arguing with another man. The confrontation appeared to have escalated, with the two men reportedly chasing each other around the gas pumps. The other individual was seen driving away from the scene, only to circle back, exit his vehicle, and open fire. More than a dozen shots were fired, fatally wounding Holmes. The gunman, who was said to be wearing a black face covering, then fled in a black pickup truck.
In the wake of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department launched an investigation, but no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the case. The identity of the suspect remains unknown, and the case is still considered open.
