In the fall of 2020, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 7-year-old Reginae Williams, a young girl from Detroit. On the evening of October 28th, Reginae was inside her home on Bedford Street, simply watching television on the couch, when the tranquility of the night was shattered by a hail of gunfire. A dark-colored vehicle, believed to be an older model Ford Crown Victoria or a similar sedan, had reportedly circled the neighborhood before pulling up to the residence and
unleashing numerous shots into the house. One of those bullets struck the young girl in the back of the head.
Reginae was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, her life hanging precariously in the balance. For two days, she fought for her life, but the severity of her injuries proved insurmountable. On October 30, 2020, Reginae Williams succumbed to the fatal gunshot wound. The tragic death of a child in such a violent manner sent shockwaves of grief and outrage through the Detroit community.
The Detroit Police Department immediately launched an intensive investigation into the drive-by shooting. Their efforts led to the identification of two suspects: 19-year-old Emmet Williams Jr. and 22-year-old Christion Mitchell-Childress. It is alleged that the two men drove by Reginae's home and deliberately fired the shots that ended her life.
In the wake of the investigation, Emmet Williams Jr. was apprehended by authorities. He was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, discharge of a firearm at a building causing death, and discharge of a weapon from a motor vehicle causing death, in addition to felony firearm charges. As the legal proceedings against Williams began, law enforcement continued their search for Christion Mitchell-Childress, who remained at large. The charges against both men underscore the gravity of the crime and the profound loss of a young life taken too soon.
