On an autumn day in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 28-year-old Keith High was tragically cut short. On November 30, 2011, High, an African American male, was inside a residence on Schoenherr Road, near the intersection of Eight Mile on the city's northeast side, when violence erupted. Another man entered the home and opened fire, creating a scene of chaos and bloodshed.
The shooting resulted in the death of not only Keith High but also 20-year-old Kalvin Turner.
A third individual, a 25-year-old man, was critically injured in the gunfire. Authorities later indicated that they believed the house where the shooting occurred was a suspected drug house, suggesting a possible motive behind the violent encounter.
The investigation into the double homicide led Detroit police to a suspect, 33-year-old Nasir Banks. Less than a month after the shooting, on December 26, 2011, Banks was located and arrested in the 12600 block of East Seven Mile Road. Two days later, he was formally arraigned on a litany of serious charges. These included two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Keith High and Kalvin Turner, one count of assault with intent to murder for the third victim, felony firearm possession, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The charges carried the potential for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if he were to be convicted.
