On a tragic day in December, a visit to check on a friend turned into a fatal encounter for 21-year-old Shaniya Todd, a mother from Highland Park, Michigan. It was December 18, 2020, when Shaniya and her 18-year-old sister, Shakiya Todd, went to a house on Lantz Street, near John R Street on Detroit's east side. An argument broke out with an 18-year-old man present at the home, D'Andre Smith. The verbal confrontation quickly and violently escalated.
