It was December 18, 2020, when Shaniya and her 18-year-old sister, Shakiya Todd, went to a house on Lantz Street, near John R Street on Detroit's east side. An argument broke out with an 18-year-old man present at the home, D'Andre Smith.
The verbal confrontation quickly and violently escalated.
The dispute culminated in gunfire, with Smith allegedly shooting both Shaniya and her sister, Shakiya. The two sisters succumbed to their injuries at the scene, their lives cut short in a sudden act of violence. In the immediate aftermath, Smith fled the location, leaving a grieving family to grapple with the devastating loss of two of their own, just days before Christmas. Shaniya, a young mother, left behind a son who would now have to grow up without her.
The investigation into the double homicide was handled by the Detroit Police Department. The search for the suspected gunman did not last long.
