On the first day of Pride Month in 2023, a life full of promise was tragically cut short in Highland Park, Michigan. Asia Davis, a 36-year-old Black transgender woman, was found deceased in her room at the Woodward Inn. Friends and family described her as a beloved, generous, and compassionate person who was affectionately known as 'Charm.' At the time of her death, she had just completed nursing school and was excited to begin a new job, standing on the precipice of a new chapter in her
life.
Late in the evening of June 1, 2023, Highland Park police officers were dispatched to the hotel on Woodward Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Davis inside a hotel room with a fatal gunshot wound to her head. The scene was heartbreaking for those who knew her, and the news sent ripples of shock and grief through the local community, particularly among her friends and fellow members of the transgender community who were left to mourn a vibrant life taken away so violently.
The investigation into her death was extensive, involving hundreds of hours of work by the Michigan State Police. For months, there was little public movement on the case, leaving loved ones to wait for answers and justice. The breakthrough came on March 12, 2024, when authorities arrested 18-year-old Carlos Lamar Scotland of Highland Park. Scotland was 17 at the time of the killing but was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to Davis's loved ones. After his arrest, Scotland's case moved through the court system, and he underwent a competency evaluation. In November, he pleaded guilty to the charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm. In January 2025, a judge sentenced the confessed killer, then 19, to a term of 17 to 30 years in prison for what was described as an 'execution-style' slaying, bringing an end to the search for justice for Asia Davis.
