On a Tuesday morning in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 28-year-old Unique Camreil Evans was walking along a sidewalk in the Heritage Hill district when his life was tragically cut short. On December 22, 2020, at approximately 11:15 a.m., near the intersection of Prospect Avenue SE and Cherry Street SE, shots rang out, and Evans was fatally wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The Grand Rapids Police Department immediately began an investigation into the
shooting. Their search for the vehicle involved in the incident led them to the city's West Side around 1 p.m. on the same day. Officers attempted to stop the suspect's vehicle, but the driver fled, initiating a police pursuit. The chase ended when the suspect's car crashed at the intersection of Hamilton Avenue NW and 11th Street NW. The driver, who was uninjured in the crash, was promptly taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Calvin Stewart. Following his arrest, the Kent County Prosecutor's Office authorized a four-count felony warrant against him. The charges brought against Stewart were Open Murder, Felony Firearm, Felony in Possession of a Firearm, and being a Habitual Offender – 4th Offense. If convicted of these charges, Stewart faces the possibility of life in prison. He was booked into the Kent County Correctional Facility to await his arraignment in the 61st District Court.
