In the quiet of a winter's day in Maple Grove Township, near Nashville, Michigan, the life of 18-year-old Gracyn-Michael Candace Brickley was brought to a brutal and untimely end on February 16, 2021. The young woman, known for her easy-going and kind-hearted spirit, was the victim of a horrific act of violence that would later be meticulously pieced together by investigators, revealing a chilling narrative of cruelty.
The events of that day unfolded at a home on Guy Road, where
Gracyn-Michael was shot twice with a. 22 rifle. Her assailant, 21-year-old Andrew John-Lawrence Lafey, did not stop there. In a display of profound depravity, he recorded himself for nearly eleven minutes as he tortured the dying young woman, stomping on her and taunting her. After her death, her body was concealed in the snow behind the residence. The grim discovery was made the following day after Lafey's own father and another man, to whom Lafey had shown the disturbing video, reported the crime to the authorities.
The subsequent investigation led to the swift arrest of Andrew Lafey. He was charged with a litany of offenses, including first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, torture, and multiple firearm-related charges. Opting for a bench trial instead of facing a jury, Lafey's fate was placed in the hands of a judge. After a four-day trial in April 2022, which included the presentation of the harrowing video evidence he had filmed, Lafey was found guilty on all counts. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would never again have the freedom to inflict such horror.
The investigation did not conclude with Lafey's conviction. Authorities uncovered that he had received assistance in the aftermath of the murder. This led to charges being filed against three other individuals in July 2022. Dustin Scott Stephens, a 36-year-old from Nashville, faced charges of perjury, tampering with evidence, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and being an accessory after the fact. Coleen Marie Rice, 46, of Hastings, and Sheralyn Randolph, 52, of Nashville, were both charged with tampering with evidence and being an accessory after the fact, with Randolph facing an enhanced sentence as a habitual offender. These additional arrests underscored the commitment of law enforcement to hold everyone involved in the tragic death of Gracyn-Michael accountable for their actions.
