The fatal confrontation occurred when Nellie, having traveled to Michigan to persuade her son to return to Virginia, engaged
in a bitter quarrel with him. The argument escalated, and Nellie reportedly struck Henry with a broom handle. In a fit of rage, Henry retaliated by fatally stabbing his mother in the neck. After committing the act, he fled the scene, leaving his mother's body on the floor. His attempt to escape was short-lived, as he was apprehended by State Police eight days later while hitchhiking.
Following his arrest, Henry Lee Lucas was charged with the murder of his mother. He was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to a prison term of 20 to 40 years for the crime. This event marked a significant point in the life of a man who would later become infamous for a string of other violent crimes.
