In the late afternoon of November 14, 2021, 18-year-old Cameron S. Williams, a Black/African American male, was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting in Battle Creek, Michigan. The incident occurred on West Jackson Street, near Angell Street, while Williams was seated in his car in the driveway of his residence. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was initially transported to a local Battle Creek hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Kalamazoo, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Authorities quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but was instead gang-related. The investigation revealed that this was one of a series of violent incidents in the area, with additional shootings occurring on Chestnut and Wilkes streets in the days following Williams' death, though no further injuries were reported from those events. The Battle Creek Police Department, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies in Kalamazoo, launched an intensive investigation into the connected shootings.
The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects in connection with the murder of Cameron Williams. The individuals taken into custody were 18-year-old Antwain Armstrong and two juveniles, 17-year-olds Tiquan Williams and Ataeveon Smith. Despite their ages, both Tiquan Williams and Ataeveon Smith are being charged as adults with open murder. The legal proceedings for the three suspects have experienced some delays, including adjournments of scheduled hearings. Defense attorneys for the accused have raised legal challenges regarding the use of confidential informants in the case, seeking to learn their identities to prepare for cross-examination.
