In the early morning hours of September 20, 2022, in Battle Creek, Michigan, the life of two-year-old Kaiden Kai Rowan Turner was tragically cut short. At approximately 2:20 a.m., while asleep in his home on Cliff Street, Kaiden was struck in the head by a bullet from a drive-by shooting. Multiple shots were fired into the residence from a dark-colored SUV. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the young boy succumbed to his injuries. Investigators believe that Kaiden and his family were not the intended targets of the shooting.
The Battle Creek Police Department swiftly launched an investigation, which was aided by numerous tips from the community. A significant breakthrough came when officers located a black Audi Q7, believed to be the vehicle used in the shooting. The vehicle had been reported stolen just days before the incident. The investigation led to the execution of multiple search warrants, resulting in the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and other evidence connected to the crime.
Within days of the shooting, three teenage suspects were apprehended. The suspects were identified as Martavon Nelson, who was 18 at the time, and a 17-year-old, Jaylen Smith. The third suspect, Hashim Bell Jr., was arrested later. All three were charged with open murder and various firearms offenses. Martavon Nelson and Jaylen Smith were arraigned and held without bond. Smith was to be tried as an adult. According to court records, Nelson allegedly told detectives he was targeting someone with whom he had an ongoing dispute. Hashim Bell Jr., 19 at the time of his arraignment, was the final suspect to be charged in connection with Kaiden's death. The arrests brought a sense of relief to the community, though the tragic loss of a young, innocent life remains.
